Atmospheric Sound Propagation Over Large-Scale Irregular Terrain
نویسندگان
چکیده
A benchmark problem on atmospheric sound propagation over irregular terrain has been solved using a stable fourth-order accurate nite di erence approximation of a highdelity acoustic model. A comparison with the parabolic equation method and ray tracing methods is made. The results show that ray tracing methods can potentially be unreliable in the presence of irregular terrain.

Benchmarking two simulation models for underwater and atmospheric sound propagation
Computational wave propagation models are widely used in underwater and atmospheric sound propagation simulation. In most realistic cases the physical domains involved are irregular. We have developed finite element techniques, applied to general irregular meshes and coupled with discrete, artificial absorbing boundary conditions of nonlocal type, for the Helmholtz equation and its ‘standard’ p...
متن کاملMultilevel Tabulated Interaction Method Applied to UHF Propagation over Irregular Terrain
A multilevel tabulated interaction method (TIM) is described for application to the analysis of exceptionally large two-dimensional (2-D) UHF terrain propagation problems. While standard TIM schemes offer extremely rapid solutions to terrain propagation problems on a medium to large scale ( 20 km), the computation times increase quadratically with problem size. For problems of extremely large s...
متن کاملEvaluation of Gaussian Processes for Large Scale Terrain Modeling
This paper addresses the problem of large scale terrain modeling for a mobile robot. Building a model of large scale terrain that can adequately handle uncertainty and incompleteness in a statistically sound way is a challenging problem. A recent work [Vasudevan et al., 2009] proposed non-stationary Gaussian processes (GP’s) based on the neural network kernel as a solution to the problem. GP’s ...
متن کاملHigh Resolution Results and Scalability of Numerical Modeling of Wind Flow at White Sand Missile Range
The NTU/ Purdue nonhydrostatic numerical model has been developed over the last 6 years to predict atmospheric motions and conditions for both the mesoscale (200 m to 200 km) and large scale turbulence scale (20 m to 200 m). It is a fully explicit, compressible three-dimensional code and has compared quite to a wide variety of known analytical solution or observed situations including the Bould...
متن کاملField Strength Prediction in Irregular Terrain – the PTP Model
This report describes a prediction technique for the calculation of the field strength of radio waves over irregular terrain paths. The concept of an "equivalent rounded obstacle" is used to account for radio propagation losses over various possible irregular terrain shapes, including shapes which cannot easily be described geometrically. The technique replaces an arbitrary terrain profile with...
